The Cumberland Police Department conducts pre-employment testing periodically. See employment calendar for the deadlines to submit applications and testing dates. Minimum Requirements

  • 21 years old (by time of academy graduation)
  • High School Diploma
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • Vision 20/40 - corrected to 20/20

Written Test

Applicants are to present themselves to representatives at the testing site at the scheduled time on the day of the testing with photo identification. Applicants arriving after the specified time will not be admitted into the testing facility. Candidates will be required to complete a preliminary background information sheet prior to taking the written test. The preliminary background information sheet will be reviewed prior to the applicant participating in the testing process. If an issue is discovered that disqualifies the applicant from the process, the applicant will be excused at that time.

What to Wear

Applicants should dress in casual business attire for the written examination however they should bring the appropriate athletic wear to participate in the physical ability test to include tennis shoes. An opportunity to change into the proper clothing will be given.

All lodging, travel expenses and meals while the candidate is enrolled in the training academy are provided for by the Cumberland Police Department.


  • Salary for police officer – Starting salary is $43,350 annually 

    Shift differential for working 7 p.m. – 7a.m.

    12-hour shifts – rotating days off
