City Code
The Historic Area Regulations, known as the historic preservation ordinance, is a section of the local zoning ordinance that provides the City of Cumberland the legal framework within which it can designate and regulate historic sites, structures, and districts in order to preserve the unique character of the City. The purpose of the City’s historic preservation ordinance is to:
Promote the preservation and appreciation of the sites, structures, and districts which reflect elements of cultural, social, economic, political, archaeological or architectural history;
- Protect local historic assets
- Stabilize and improve property values
- Strengthen the local economy
- Foster civic beauty and the city’s architectural heritage
