As a result of the Backflow Prevention and Cross Connection Program mandated by the State of Maryland, the City of Cumberland Water Department will be moving your water meter outside the home and installing a backflow preventer.
The purpose of this program is to protect the integrity of the public drinking water sources by allowing water to flow into homes, businesses, and facilities; and prevent backflow of possible contaminated water back into the water system.
This program involves the installation of a new larger meter box, water meter, and meter setter with a backflow preventer. The work will require excavation in the area of the existing water box. The city will restore the disturbed area to its original condition and city crews will patch all driveways and/or roadways in a timely manner.
Residents should be advised that their water service will be disrupted for a short period of time during the construction process. The water department will notify you prior to the disruption. If you have any questions regarding this notice, please contact the water department at 301-759-6625.
